The Scottish Government has introduced a Code of Practice for Letting Agents. The code sets out the standards expected of all agents operating in Scotland, it will be an offence for anyone acting as a letting agent to do so unless they are registered.
The Scottish Government state that it will “help raise standards (where this is needed) and help build a more effective private rented sector that meets the needs of tenants, landlords and letting agents”.
Grange Lettings and its staff are all fully qualified members of ARLA and will therefore meet the required criteria set out in the code, as well as passing the ‘fit and proper person’ test.
Until this legislation came into force, anyone could set themselves up in business and call themselves a letting agent, with so much legal and technical knowledge needed to property operate as a letting agent, the lack of any regulation meant that often landlords and tenants were receiving very poor if not dangerous service and advice.
The register for applications opened in January 2018 and the Scottish Government have set an application deadline of 30th September 2018.
